Don't be fooled - even if large parts of the BahnRadweg Hessen run on former railway lines, there are still a few climbs to master. It is not for nothing that the long-distance cycle path leads through the beautiful low mountain ranges of the Spessart, the Vogelsberg and the Rhön. But it's not just the landscape that inspires you along the way. In cities like Bad Hersfeld, Fulda, Gedern, Hanau and more there are also enough opportunities to enjoy culture and cuisine along the way.

The start of the route is in Bad Hersfeld. The city is particularly known for the ruins of the monastery and the Bad Hersfeld Festival that takes place there. From Bad Hersfeld the route leads to Thuringia for a short visit. There you drive following the Werra and Ulster into the Rhön.

One of the highlights of the BahnRadweg Hessen is on the Milseburgradweg. There you can drive through the railway tunnel of the same name in the summer months (May-October). Not much later, the baroque city of Fulda waits for visitors before reaching the Vogelsberg on the bike path. Schlitz and Lauterbach are tranquil towns with old town centers and an interesting history.

A little further south, the path forks not far from Hartmannshain. The path now leads in through the Spessart and reaches the beautiful Main in Hanau at the southernmost point. If you want to go back to Bad Hersfeld, you can do the second part of the loop and switch to the Fulda R1 cycle path at Schlitz. Like this you reach the starting point in Bad Hersfeld after driving nearly 400 kilometers.
